Irrigation Post-Modernization. Farmers Envisioning Irrigation Policy in the Region of Valencia (Spain)

During the last three decades, like many other Mediterranean states, Spain has intensively promoted modernization of irrigation, focusing mainly on introduction pressurized irrigation systems. Following 30 years investment, a shift in policies is needed to solve some deficiencies this process and incorporate new measures cope with upcoming challenges generated by international markets, climate change social economic processes. This paper describes analyses results participatory research carried out water user associations autonomous region Valencia, order define post-modernization policies. A survey 24 local workshops involving 304 were conducted during season 2018 form an assessment sector design The show that after important obsolescence infrastructure become current main priority, making farmers dependent public subsidies. New necessities have also emerged, such as renewable energies nonconventional resources, which consider indispensable reduce operating costs guarantee supply.
